Healthy Hair Starts With a Healthy Scalp

If you’ve noticed your hair feels thinner, more fragile, or you’re seeing more hair in your brush or shower drain than usual, it’s natural to wonder what’s causing it.

Hair thinning can be influenced by many factors, including hormones, genetics, stress, nutrition and overall health. However, one factor that is often overlooked is the products we use on our hair and scalp every day.

One ingredient that continues to raise concerns among hair professionals is Sulfates, particularly Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS).

SLS is commonly used in commercial shampoos because of its powerful cleansing properties. It helps remove dirt, excess oil, product build-up and impurities from the hair and scalp. It’s also responsible for creating the rich, foamy lather many people associate with a shampoo working effectively.

The problem is that while SLS is highly effective at cleansing, it can also be extremely aggressive.

Research has shown that SLS can disrupt the skin barrier and has the potential to affect cellular proteins within the scalp. The scalp relies on a healthy protective barrier to maintain hydration, support healthy follicles and protect the delicate environment where hair grows.

Protein is one of the key building blocks of healthy hair. When the scalp becomes compromised through excessive dryness or irritation, hair strands may become weaker, more brittle and more prone to breakage. Over time, this can contribute to hair that appears thinner and less healthy.

SLS is also known for its strong oil-stripping properties. While removing excess oil is important, stripping away too much of the scalp’s natural sebum can leave both the scalp and hair dehydrated. This often results in increased dryness, frizz, breakage and reduced shine.

Other Shampoo Ingredients Worth Watching

Parabens

Used as preservatives to extend shelf life, parabens have been the subject of ongoing discussion due to their ability to mimic oestrogen within the body. While research is still evolving, many people choose to minimise their exposure where possible.

Artificial Fragrances

The term “fragrance” can represent dozens, sometimes hundreds, of individual chemicals. For sensitive individuals, these ingredients can contribute to scalp irritation, itching and inflammation.

Sodium Chloride (Salt)

Often added as a thickening agent, sodium chloride can be particularly drying for both the hair and scalp. It may also shorten the lifespan of certain hair treatments such as keratin smoothing systems.

Propylene Glycol

Used to help products retain moisture and improve texture, propylene glycol can trigger irritation and sensitivity in some individuals, particularly those with an already compromised scalp barrier.

Diethanolamine (DEA)

DEA is sometimes used to create foam and improve product consistency. Concerns have been raised regarding long-term exposure, leading many professional haircare brands to remove it from their formulations.

Plastic-Based Coating Agents

Certain ingredients, including some silicones and plastic-derived polymers, are used to coat the hair shaft, creating immediate shine and smoothness.

Initially, these ingredients can make hair appear healthier by sealing the cuticle, reducing frizz and helping improve shine. However, with repeated use they may build up on the hair shaft, causing hair to feel heavy, flat and difficult to manage. This build-up can also prevent moisture and beneficial ingredients from penetrating the hair effectively.

The Bigger Picture

Hair health is never about a single ingredient.

The condition of your hair is influenced by hormones, nutrition, stress levels, sleep quality, gut health, inflammation, scalp health and the products you use daily.

If you’re noticing changes in your hair thickness, increased shedding or a dry, irritated scalp, it may be worth taking a closer look at the ingredients in your haircare products. Sometimes small changes can make a significant difference to the overall health and appearance of your hair over time.
