The Complete Guide to Skin Ageing

How Your Skin Changes Through Your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s & Beyond

Your skin tells the story of your life. Every smile, every holiday in the sunshine, every late night, every stressful period and every milestone leaves its mark. As we grow older, our skin naturally changes, but understanding why those changes happen allows us to care for it in the best possible way.

Ageing is inevitable, but looking after your skin doesn’t mean trying to stop the ageing process. It means supporting your skin through every stage of life, helping it remain healthy, resilient and radiant.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear in clinic is, “There’s nothing I can do, it’s just my age.”

The truth is, while we can’t stop time, we can influence many of the factors that affect how our skin ages. With the right skincare, healthy lifestyle choices and professional guidance, it’s possible to maintain healthier-looking skin for many years to come.

Why Does Our Skin Age?

Skin ageing happens through a combination of intrinsic ageing and extrinsic ageing.

Intrinsic ageing – the natural ageing process

Intrinsic ageing is the ageing process that happens naturally within the body. It’s influenced by our genetics and simply getting older.

As the years pass:

  • Skin cell turnover slows.
  • Collagen production gradually decreases.
  • Elastin fibres begin to weaken.
  • The skin barrier becomes more fragile.
  • Natural oil production reduces.
  • Skin becomes thinner and often drier.

These changes happen to everyone and are a normal part of life.

Extrinsic ageing – the ageing we can influence

Extrinsic ageing is caused by external factors and lifestyle choices. These include:

  • UV exposure
  • Pollution
  • Smoking
  • Poor nutrition
  • Chronic stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Alcohol
  • Environmental toxins

Collectively, these factors are known as the skin exposome, everything your skin is exposed to throughout your lifetime.

Research suggests that up to 80% of visible skin ageing is caused by external influences, particularly sun exposure. This means that although we can’t control our chronological age, we can influence how our skin ages by protecting it and making healthy lifestyle choices.

As these factors accumulate over time, collagen and elastin break down more quickly, free radicals damage healthy skin cells, and the skin gradually becomes less firm, less hydrated and more prone to pigmentation and fine lines.

The encouraging news is that many of these changes can be slowed by establishing good skincare habits and supporting your skin from both the outside and the inside.

The Foundations of Healthy Skin at Every Age

Regardless of whether you’re in your twenties or your seventies, every effective skincare routine is built on three essential principles: cleansing, hydration and protection. These foundations support your skin’s natural function and allow active ingredients to perform more effectively.

1. Cleanse – Preparing Your Skin for Success

Cleansing is about far more than removing make-up. Throughout the day, your skin collects excess oil, sweat, pollution, sunscreen, bacteria and environmental debris. If these impurities remain on the skin, they can contribute to congestion, irritation and reduce the effectiveness of the products applied afterwards.

A gentle cleanser removes these impurities while respecting the skin’s natural protective barrier and microbiome.

The skin microbiome is a community of beneficial microorganisms that helps defend against harmful bacteria and supports healthy skin function. Harsh cleansing can disrupt this delicate balance, leading to dryness, irritation and increased sensitivity.

Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type helps create the ideal foundation for everything that follows.

2. Hydrate – Supporting Your Skin Barrier

Healthy skin relies on water. As we age, our skin naturally loses moisture more easily through a process known as Trans epidermal Water Loss (TEWL). This simply means that water escapes from the skin more quickly than it once did.

When this happens, skin can begin to feel:

  • Tight
  • Dry
  • Rough
  • Less supple
  • More prone to fine lines

Hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides help attract and retain moisture, strengthening the skin barrier and improving comfort, elasticity and overall skin health.

Well-hydrated skin also allows many active ingredients to work more effectively.

3. Protect – The Most Powerful Anti-Ageing Habit

If there is one product that dermatologists, skincare professionals and skin scientists consistently agree on, it’s sunscreen. Daily sun protection is the single most effective step you can take to help prevent premature skin ageing.

Even on cloudy days, UVA rays penetrate deeply into the skin. Unlike UVB rays, which are responsible for sunburn, UVA rays quietly break down collagen and elastin over many years, contributing to wrinkles, loss of firmness and pigmentation.

Modern life also exposes us to pollution and free radicals, which create oxidative stress within the skin. A broad-spectrum SPF, combined with antioxidant-rich skincare, helps defend against these daily environmental aggressors.

One of my favourite pieces of advice is this:
“Your skin remembers every sunny day you’ve ever enjoyed”
The SPF you wear today is an investment in how your skin will look ten or twenty years from now. But if you haven’t always worn sunscreen, don’t worry. It’s never too late to start protecting your skin.

Understanding Your Skin Through the Decades

Every decade brings different changes, and your skincare should evolve alongside them. Rather than following trends, the goal is to understand what your skin needs at each stage of life.

Your 20s – Building Healthy Habits

Your twenties are often considered your skin’s healthiest years. Collagen production is still high, your skin repairs itself efficiently and elasticity remains strong. However, collagen production begins to slow from our mid-twenties onwards, even if you can’t yet see visible changes.

This decade is about prevention rather than correction.

Focus on:

  • Gentle cleansing
  • Daily hydration
  • Broad-spectrum SPF every day
  • Antioxidants such as Vitamin C
  • Understanding your skin type

Developing consistent habits now can make a significant difference to how your skin ages in later decades.

Your 30s – Supporting Skin Renewal

By your thirties, the natural renewal process begins to slow. Cell turnover becomes less efficient, collagen production gradually declines and the first fine lines may begin to appear, particularly a3round the eyes and mouth. Many people also notice their complexion becoming slightly duller or drier than it once was.

This is an excellent time to support your skin with ingredients that encourage healthy renewal while continuing to protect it from environmental damage.

Focus on:

  • Vitamin C for antioxidant protection
  • Gentle exfoliation to encourage cell renewal
  • Hydrating serums
  • Eye care if required
  • Consistent SPF

Remember, glowing skin isn’t achieved by using more products, it comes from using the right products consistently.

Your 40s – Supporting Collagen and Skin Structure

The forties are often a decade of transition. Hormonal changes, particularly during perimenopause, can have a significant impact on the skin. Collagen and elastin decline more rapidly, skin may become thinner and drier, and firmness often begins to reduce. You may also notice changes in skin texture and increased sensitivity.

This is the time to focus on strengthening the skin barrier while supporting collagen production. Ingredients such as retinal, peptides, niacinamide and antioxidants can help improve the appearance of fine lines while supporting healthier-looking skin.

Professional treatments that stimulate collagen production, alongside a personalised skincare routine, can also play an important role during this stage.

Your 50s and Beyond – Nourishing Mature Skin

Following menopause, declining estrogen levels can accelerate collagen loss.

Skin often becomes:

  • Drier
  • Thinner
  • Less firm
  • More fragile
  • More prone to pigmentation

Years of cumulative sun exposure may also become more noticeable through uneven skin tone and age spots. This doesn’t mean your skin is beyond help. Quite the opposite. Mature skin benefits enormously from nourishing ingredients that support the skin barrier, encourage hydration and improve overall resilience.

Retinoids, peptides, ceramides, antioxidants and brightening ingredients can all have an important place within a well-balanced routine.

Consistency is far more important than complexity.

Healthy Skin Starts From Within

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt over my years in clinic is that skincare is only part of the picture. The healthiest skin isn’t created by expensive creams alone.

It’s supported by:

  • Good nutrition
  • Hydration
  • Quality sleep
  • Stress management
  • Hormonal balance
  • Omega-3 levels
  • Managing inflammation
  • Regular movement

Your skin is the largest organ in your body and often reflects what’s happening beneath the surface.

This is why I believe beauty truly starts from within. Supporting your overall health can have a remarkable impact on your skin’s appearance, helping you achieve results that topical skincare alone simply cannot deliver.

There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Routine

Although every decade brings common changes, no two skins age in exactly the same way. Genetics, hormones, lifestyle, environment and overall health all influence what your skin needs. That’s why I never believe in recommending the same routine for everyone.

The best skincare routine is always the one that’s personalised to you.

Embracing Healthy Ageing

Ageing is a privilege.

Rather than trying to turn back the clock, let’s focus on helping your skin remain healthy, comfortable and confident at every stage of life.

A consistent routine built around cleansing, hydration and daily protection, supported by the right active ingredients and a healthy lifestyle, will always outperform chasing the latest skincare trend.

You can’t change yesterday’s sun exposure, but you can make choices today that your future skin will thank you for. Because healthy skin isn’t about looking younger.

It’s about looking and feeling your very best, at every age.

Healthy Skin Starts with Understanding Your Skin

By now, you’ve hopefully discovered that healthy skin isn’t simply about your age or using the latest trending product. Every person’s skin is unique, and while understanding how skin changes through the decades is incredibly helpful, there’s no single routine that’s right for everyone.

Your skin is influenced by a wide range of factors, including your genetics, hormones, lifestyle, nutrition, medical history and environment. That’s why a personalised approach will always achieve better results than choosing products based on your age alone or following the latest skincare trends.

If you’re unsure what your skin really needs, which ingredients are right for you, or whether professional treatments could help you achieve your skin goals, a Discovery Session is the perfect place to start.
